The scored
an impressive 0 -2 win over Raunds Tigers.
How do you tame a Tiger – easy whip up a storm, and
that is exactly what the Tornadoes did today!
This eagerly awaited local derby was time for the Tornadoes
to win back respect having suffered only one of a few defeats
to the Tigers earlier in the season – additional spice
was added to the recipe as there were some classmates to front
up to at school the next day.
A few strategic changes were made to the formation to counter
the attacking flair of Raunds and the defensive pillars of
Jordon Mahon (keeper), Liam Carter, Mathew Hansord and Cameron
Glynn carried out their duties excellently. The midfield duo
of Ryan Wright and William Morrison battled tirelessly to
dominate the midfield and show their creative skills. Ryan
Caller led the line Sheareresque – guts, determination
and skill.
Round 1 started at a furious pace and thus the tempo was
set for the match. Raunds pressed and Thrapston absorbed and
then counter attacked, and from such a situation the Tornadoes
took the lead. Ryan Caller chasing an apparent lost cause
managed to get in a cross for Ryan Wright to nudge home at
the back post – a well deserved lead. Thrapston continued
to frustrate and hustle Raunds and created some good opportunities
whilst denying Raunds to a few long-range efforts. An excellent
first half.
Round 2 would test the teams’ resolve as they were
now up hill. Again, the defensive unit worked brilliantly;
there was always another defender and another tackle to stifle
a Tiger. Offensively is where the Tornadoes showed real class
– swift breaks with crisp accurate passing often tore
the Tigers defense apart. The introduction of Ross Munro for
the tiring Ryan Wright revitalised the midfield and Munro
carried on the good work. Ryan Caller scored the second and
decisive goal mid way through the second half. Having been
denied by two defenders he unleashed a shot from wide on the
left that sailed over the keeper – just rewards for
all his efforts. Towards the end of the match Graeme Wright
entered the battle to enhance the Tornadoes attack and ensure
that the final minutes were played in the Raunds half.
For the full 40 minutes this was a non-stop battle between
two very good and evenly matched teams - the difference in
the end was the will to win, and the Tornadoes displayed this
throughout the team. This was the best team performance the
Tornadoes have made and proves what they can achieve. Every
player today was a mini hero and the smiles on the faces of
the boys and parents at the final whistle was evidence enough.
