Under 10's Tornadoes Match Report - 7th March 2004 v Aztec Warriors

The Under 10's Tornadoes drew 2 - 2 against Aztec Warriors.

Another week another roller coaster ride, as after the highs of our last performance we plunged towards the very average this time around. Changes in the line up seemed to have unbalanced the team, which resulted in this rather disjointed performance.

Playing uphill in the first half it was a rather defensive display as the Warriors pressed forward hoping to capture the Tornadoes scalps but the defence stood proud and rebuffed all advances. However, offensively the Tornadoes lacked ideas and conviction and rarely threatened to inflict damage on the Warriors. All square at half time with no scores registered, was on balance, due to the resilience of the Tornadoes defense rather than the effectiveness of the team.

A stern half time lecture to the team would hopefully stiffen their resolve and with the advantage of the slope we all hoped and expected to see a revival of form. A sprinkling of tenacity was seen from the start of the second half but this soon dissipated as the Tornadoes conceded a soft goal when goalkeeper Mahon let a back pass roll through his legs. Ryan Wright was thrown into the fray as a replacement for the injured Carter and his dynamism made an immediate impact in midfield, when from a corner he won Graeme Wright stabbed home to equalise.

The Warriors stung into action counter attacked and it was not long before the Tornadoes were behind again. Another mistake was cruelly punished as the Warriors adopted a “no prisoner policy” and converted a gift-wrapped tap in from a missed ball. Time for the cavalry charge and two more substitutions – Ryan Caller and Wizza Morrison replaced Graeme Wright and William Gadsby. The pace, control and quality were immediately in evidence and the goal traffic became distinctly one-way. In injury time justice was done, when after a sustained period of pressure Ryan Caller played the “get out of jail card” and fired home an equaliser – did we not breathe a sigh of relief?

This game is yet another one to be filed under the heading ‘far from convincing display’ - the Tornadoes can raise their game for the big matches but have yet to develop the art of killing off weaker opposition. Next weeks weather warning looks to be forecasting an interesting clash as the Tornadoes run headlong into the Hurricanes,
who have shown a much improved level of performance - remember to bring your storm wear!
