Under 14's Match Report - 19th October 2003 Vs Grammarians

The Under 14's got back to winning ways by beating Grammarians 2 - 5 away.

On a windy day two sides played a great game of football under
difficult conditions. Thrapston benefited from winning the toss by
playing with the wind in the first half. Grammarian’s defence was put
under early pressure by the runs of Chris Meadway and Ali Jones early on
and were lucky not to concede when Meadway finished off a good move only
to be adjudged offside. The early pressure eventually told when Ali
Jones pounced on a rebound from Chris Meadways shot to bury it home.
Thrapston continued to go forward and should have added to their lead
but the Grammarians defence held on and against the run of play
equalised after a mix up in the Thrapston defence. The play ebbed and
flowed with both sides threatening until just before half time when20
Robert Blades scored after a Steven Wildman corner bounced in the box
and Robert cracked the ball off the underside of the crossbar and into
the back of the net.

The second half continued as the first but Thrapston's passing came into
its own and the defence seemed to cope better against the wind. Some
great passing moves from Steven Wildman, Robert Blades, David Cunningham
and Ali Jones linking the midfield with the lone striker Chris Meadway
again put Grammarians on the back foot and they conceded when Chris
Meadway was put through by Ali Jones and despite cries of offside Chris
buried the ball past the despairing keeper. Grammarians came back at
Thrapston who were still the better side, but the Thrapston defence held
firm with Sam Gough, Michael White and Harvey Hopcroft at the heart. The
pressure paid off as Grammarians scored when a long-range shot gave
keeper Sammy Cobley no chance. Thrapston continued to press and Chris
Meadway pounced on a defensive error and cracked a scorcher passed the
Grammarians keeper. Thrapston soaked up some pressure as Grammarians
pushed forward but they were caught as Jack Nicholson laid the ball on
for Chris Meadway who rounded off his hat-trick with another cracker.20

The result assured Thrapston continued to play their passing game and the
final whistle was greeted with much applause by the travelling fans.
