The kept up their
impressive form with a 3 - 1 home win over Rothwell Aztec.
On a day with a number of absentees the under 14’s
continued their impressive run with a 3-1 win over Rothwell
Aztec.
Having made a lightening start to the first half the boys
found themselves deservedly ahead when a Jack Nicholson free
kick found Ali Jones in the penalty box, who shot first time
to beat the keeper. Thrapston pressed forward and Rothwell
found it hard to cope with the pace of Chris Meadway and quick
passing of Ali Jones who continued to link up well together.
Against the run of play Rothwell hit back when a freekick
was awarded for a handball and a sweetly struck shot gave
Sammy Cobley no chance in goal. Thrapston continued to press
and caught Rothwell out at the back, who were lucky when Ali
Jones broke through and would of scored had an offside not
been given as Chris Meadway was walking back clearly not interfering
with play.
Rothwell gained more confidence and with a few holes appearing
in Thrapston’s midfield and at the back they were getting
much more of the ball and came close on a number of occasions.
Halftime came and the boys continued in the second half as
the first half had started with Chris running on to passes
from Ali Jones with Steven Wildman seeing more of the ball
and Meadway was unlucky when hitting the bar from distance.
The second half saw the inclusion of debutant Mark Whiteman
who came on for Max Kemp who was also making his first start
of the season. Both players did themselves proud with Max
a handful on the right wing while Mark made an early impression
winning some important tackles and making some good runs on
the right hand side.
Meanwhile David Cunningham acting as the anchor man in midfield
put in some impressive tackles. Again, deservedly Thrapston
took the lead after a deftly chipped through ball from Ali
Jones dropped into the path of Chris Meadway who in turn lobbed
the goalkeeper to make it 2-1. Rothwell came back at Thrapston
again and Sammy Cobley pulled off a fantastic save from a
long range shot and Tom Robertson made a superb tackle in
the Thrapston box when one on one with their winger. The pressure
built but there seemed no way through with Sam Gough, Michael
White and Brendan May solid at the back and Rothwell’s
heads dropped as Thrapston pushed on to get the decider. The
watching crowd were not disappointed when a through ball from
Steven Wildman again found Chris Meadway whose pace was too
much for the Rothwell defenders and he lashed in a shot to
make his tally 13 for the season so far.
Thrapston could have added to the score but as Manager I
was relieved when the final whistle went and proud of a first
class display especially in the second half when the boys
did exactly what was asked of them. Well done lads……
