Under 9's Match Report - 25th April 2004 v Weekley Rovers Purple

The Under 9's lost their final game of the season 1 -4 against Weekley Rovers Purple.

Thrapston signed off their season with noble defeat at the hands of a very good Weekley outfit, in front of the largest crowd of the season at the Kettering Coliseum.

In an even first half, Thrapston had several chances to score, with Liam Toon, and Luke Rivett both going close. However, it was Weekley that got the opener with a well struck shot from the edge of the area, to go into the break one up.

Weekley are a big, powerful, as well as skilful side, and they often out-muscled Thrapston in the key battles in Midfield. Usually this battle was fairly won, but on occasions, surely a more experienced referee would have intervened, succumbing to the anguished shouts from the home dugout.

A Sven like substitution of almost all outfield players at half time, brought Thrapston hope of a successful second half, but it was the unchanged Alex Vitue between the sticks who turned in a Man Of The Match performance to deny the Rovers time and again.

In a five minute burst midway through the second half, Rovers scored three more goals to seal the victory, but, as they have done all season, the Town boys refused to give up and scored the goal of the game, as Josh Cummins smashed home a last minute volley, from a cross from the left. Magnifico!

So Summer’s come, Winter’s gone, and the season fades to memory. Thoughts now turn to the next campaign. Is the Manager safe, or is there a new man already lined up? Will we acquire some new players to strengthen the squad? Will Ged complete his morse code course with that flag before September? And will The Under 9 Dads “do” their Under 10 counterparts in a 6-a-side challenge?

These questions and more will be answered over the summer and into next season. Enjoy the break!

Final score Thrapston Town one, Weekley Rovers Purple Four.
