Under 9's Match Report - 7th March 2004 v Ise Lodge Falcons

The Under 9's got a good result against Ise Lodge Falcons winning 2 - 0.

In football punditry, they say that the mark of good side is one which wins, even when they don’t play well. On the evidence from this match, then Thrapston are a very good team indeed, as they failed to put the falcons to flight in a dour encounter at the Glebe, but still emerged as two, nil winners.

The return to action saw Thrapston huffin and puffin, whilst playing almost all of the first half in the Falcons box. Chances came and went for Liam Toon, Sam Gallagher, Luke Rivett and Tom Alsop, all failing to convert decent chances. Going in where eagles dare, would surely have produced more goals, before first Gallagher and then Toon did manage to poke the ball home to give Thrapston a 2-goal advantage, with their 7th and 6th goals of the campaign respectively.

Falcons, trying to get back into the game were denied when the stand-in referee seemed somehow asleep when he failed to spot an infringement on the edge of the Thrapston box, only to then blow up moments later, when the Falcons had a sight of goal. More Mavis Riley than Mike Riley was the view from the terraces. Half time Thrapston 2, Falcons 0.

Half time changes were made to both the referee and to the Thrapston midfield, but unlike the former, the latter was to have little positive effect on the game, as Town struggled to master the conditions, the opposition, and on occasions themselves. More chances came and went as slowly and majestically the Falcons soared and the Thrapston midfield and defence were their prey. Time and again they swooped on the Thrapston Goal, but they were denied by a combination of good keeping from Alex Vitue and some off target finishing. Alas there was to be no swan-song, as the game ended 2:0.

An eerie day for the town, but still a victory. The boys will play much better than this and not get a result, so lets take the victory and forget the performance in time for next week.
