Thrapston Town Blue 12 - Generals Blue 1
Thrapston entered this game in confident mood
after good results in the last fortnight, eager the break
free from their tag of the “Chelsea of the Weetabix
League”, but since the start of the season, the comparisons
have been obvious: a mix of new imports blending with established
stars, a reliance on defending, rather than attacking play,
grinding out results, rather than outscoring sides in any
goal fest, and oh yes, they’ve both got a manager with
greying hair and some strange ideas! How different to previous
weeks, would today be, we awaited eagerly to find out.
Thrapston started the match with a more attacking formation:
2 up front, rather than the one up and one in the hole, of
previous weeks, when the one in the hole, never really managed
to get himself out of it! The first five minutes; first Thrapston
take the lead when leading scorer Tom Alsop fires home from
close range. Then, another back pass fiasco sees Thrapston
on their line defending. Next disaster, Generals equalise
as the Thrapston defence slumbers. Return to the other end,
where Alsop nets his second, cutting in following a short
corner, and bending the ball, Beckham like into the far corner,
with the keeper having no chance – triffic shot boyo,
as that nice Craig Bellamy said to DB yesterday.
Alsop completed his hat-trick, then his fourth and fifth,
before Harvey Chandler Abbott got in on the act, with the
sixth, and Alsop got his sixth and Thrapston’s seventh
on the stroke of halftime.
The second half was a one sided affair, with a positive Tsunami
of Thrapston attacking waves flooding the Generals defence.
Alsop added the eighth, Liam Toon the ninth, Sam Gallagher
the tenth, Alsop the eleventh, before Gallagher rounded things
off with his second, and Thrapston’s twelfth of the
game.
A great result, but one that in reality could have been even
better, given the chances that were created, and the attempts
to score from increasingly outlandish situations. But a great
result nonetheless, which the lads can be proud of.
Although Alsop got eight and the man of the match award,
it was pleasing to see a few more names appearing on the goal
scoring chart. Unfortunately, Josh Scarbrow isn’t yet
one of them. Without a goal in a season and a half, he was
pushed forward in this game, and despite his best efforts
and those of his team mates to create a goal for him, it just
didn’t happen – maybe next time!
Finally, a word for The Generals, who played their hearts
out throughout, didn’t let their heads drop and deserve
credit for their attitude. WELL DONE!!
