Thrapston Town Blues 1 Vs Kettering Generals Red 2
So, with the first days of spring upon us, warming our hearts,
and gladdening our souls we made our way to the Glebe. As
the Generals prepared for war, so the Azzuri were given their
battle orders: Pass and move and tackle tough, and remember
you need to score to win: we want no Mancunian inspired San
Siro laments this bright morning, but instead recall of a
job well done in Bay Arena. Play on.
What transpired was quite probably the worst performance
of the season. Players getting what they deserve for a) thinking
you only have to turn up to win, b) not listening to their
coaches and being caught out of position time and again and
c) failing, yet again, to take chances when they present (sometimes
these can be difficult but several today were served up plattered
and only lacked the salad garnish)
The game started with little fluidity and with their first
shot of the game the Generals took the lead, the shot going
in off the keeper’s knees, his gloves some way from
the action. Thrapston huffed and puffed, but rarely threatened,
it being a rarity for more than 2 passes to be strung together.
Then a reprieve: Liam Toon struck a fierce drive from outside
the area, that the keeper could only parry on to his cross
bar, and Tom Alsop was on hand the lash home the equaliser
from close range. That’s how it stayed until half time.
The second half was even more frustrating. Alsop, so often
the goal scoring talisman for the side this season was frustrated
by some solid defending, which required cannier thinking and
play to unlock. He did however create a number of opportunities
for others to score, but these chances were spurned. In reality
as a side, we rely too heavily on Alsop’s goals for
our success, and today this over reliance was to cost us dear.
Mid way through the second half disaster struck. A defence
at sixes and sevens, not communicating let the Generals attacker
have a free run on goal and he made no mistake. That’s
how it ended, with little in between to suggest a way back
for the blues. Credit to the Generals for turning round their
defeat earlier in the season. In a european context, a performance
more manc than scouse had cost us dear.
The players now have a 3 week break. Time to reflect, and
consider how they can put things right. Next up it’s
the Thrapston Derby and on current form, it’s all yellow,
so come on you blues!!!
Final score Thrapston Town Blue 1, Generals Red 2
