Thrapston Town 3 - Burton Youth United 0
Thrapston went in to this game looking to end
a run of three successive defeats, spanning the winter break.
Defeat today, after battling so well last week against Burton’s
other side, would be no use at all, or as its now described
in our house, as much use as a polish international goal keeper.
And so to the match. From the off, Thrapston set out their
stall to attack. They were passing well and for the most part
Alex Vitue and Josh Scarbrow at the back were spectators admiring
the neat interchanges that created chance after chance for
the town.
But when you are on top and creating chances, you have to
translate the advantage into goals, and this was something
that Thrapston failed to do in the first half. Tom Alsop,
Harvey Chandler Abbott and Liam Toon were all guilty of spurning
chances that could have taken Thrapston out of sight by half
time. Instead, just a single Alsop strike, finished well from
eight yards, separated the sides at the break. This goal owed
nothing to the pass and move philosophy so widely espoused,
and was instead in the Wimbledon styli – big kick out
of keeper’s hands, two bounces, BANG!
To the Second half. Despite both the slope and breeze in
Burton’s favour this half, little changed in terms of
possession or the balance of play. If anything, Thrapston
had too much of the ball, and several players were guilty
of over elaborating, or being a little too greedy, and not
passing to team mates in better positions when they had the
chance. Alsop hit the woodwork for the second time in the
match, before converting another chance to make it two nil.
Thrapston made the game safe when Chandler Abbott slammed
home his fourth goal of the campaign from close range. The
work of man of the match Matthew King, Jordan Bateman, Sam
Gallagher, Chris Gardener and Liam Toon in midfield ensured
that Burton were not given a lifeline after this.
Overall a very good performance and a defensive shut out
which is encouraging. The challenge for Thrapston now that
their campaign in back on track is to keep winning and showing
people what they are capable of.
Final score Thrapston Town Blue three, Burton Youth United
nul.
