Thrapston Town Blues vs Weekley Rovers Purple
Election fever is in the air. Yes, the voting slips for players
player and supporters player of the season were handed out
this weekend, and the players were on the hustings today,
trying to impress any wavering voters, as they took on one
of the top sides in the division.
Defence will be a hot topic in the election, but today the
normally robust Thrapston rearguard that is the backbone of
the side struggled on occasions to deal with attackers, confident
with the ball at their feet and prepared to take them on.
The first half started with Weekley on top, with the slope
to their advantage, the blues stifling their attacks but behind
in the polls. Then, a failure to tackle let in the Weekley
attackers, who made no mistake, one, nil.
Thrapston began to assert themselves on the game, and after
some good work by Jordan Bateman and Matthew King, the ball
arrived at the feet of Tom Alsop. A flick past the defender
and he was away, advancing on goal before drilling the ball
left footed in to the corner of the net, all square.
Thrapston were buzzing now, and had a chance to take the
lead before half time, when the ball fizzed across the box
and King saw his effort go just wide. However, it was Weekley
who got the important goal, after more defensive frailty.
They were fortunate to hold this lead though as Harvey Chandler
Abbott saw a shot from fully 40 yards crash in to the crossbar
straight from the restart. But the ball rebounded to safety,
so Weekley would go in to the break two, one up
In to the second half and Thrapston were again under the
cosh for long periods, but always looked capable of scoring
on the break, while man of the match Alex Vitue pulled off
a number of fine saves to keep the score respectable. But
is was not to be. Weekley grabbed a third mid way through
the half and try as they might the Town could not force a
way back.
A disappointing result, but a generally good performance
against one of the top sides. However, the game did show up
some defensive weaknesses which will need to be worked on
in training. Lets make sure we end the season on a high note
next weekend.
