Finedon Vics 2 Vs Thrapston Town Blues 5
Thrapston’s preparations for this match were thrown
in to turmoil in the small hours of Sunday Morning, as both
the first team coach and goalkeeper were taken ill and were
unable to make the fixture today. Was it a small round virus,
or a big fat kebab that caused the problem? The samples are
still at the lab, but we know what the smart money is on.
Surely now is the time to recognise that donner meat, although
not on the IAAF banned list, and in no way performance enhancing,
should be discontinued immediately as a dietary supplement!
And so to the fixture itself. A Chilli breeze greeted the
teams as the prepared for kick-off, against a team new to
the league who we therefore had not pittaed ourselves against
previously. Thrapston started with volunteer Matthew King
in goal, and he was to be a spectator for all of the first
19 minutes of the game.
Sheek passing movement created a number of chances for the
town, who were soon into their stride. First Harvey Chandler
Abbott scored with a close range effort. Next he swung in
a corner, which although he claimed it, the dubious goals
panel might want another look at. Tom Alsop got in on the
act, before Chandler Abbott netted the goal of the game, to
complete his hat-trick. He brought the ball down well on the
edge of the area, gave a little shamee and then slammed the
ball into the top far corner of the net. Finedon got a lifeline
in the last minute of the half. The reason for the penalty
award remains unclear but it was dispatched with aplomb to
make it 4:1.
Although four one up at half time, Thrapston knew the second
half would be a battle, without any substitutes as players
tired and so it was to prove. Alsop went in goal, and for
the first ten minutes of the half little happened, other than
a couple of Finedon half chances which were well defended,
as Sam Gallagher, Josh Scarbrow and Chris Gardener defended
manfully.
For the final quarter Chandler Abbott donn(a)ed the keepers
jersey and he was to prove the busiest of our three keepers
today. Finedon scored with a good header from a nicely worked
corner. Now the nerves were jangling. But then in the space
of 2 minutes, Chandler Abbott produced a fine save, and then
the ball went forward, where Alsop scored his second to settle
any nerves in the Thrapston camp – now its just a couple
of stomachs that need settling!!!
Final score Finedon Vics 2, Thrapston Town Blues 5.
