Earls Barton 6 v Thrapston Town Juniors 1
A severe dose of reality was served up today when the optimism
generated at the start of the season was blown away on the
gusting winds of hope. The under 11’s, who have the
potential to play good football, came up against a team who
were stronger and much more determined and came away from
Earls Barton well beaten.
Early on Thrapston had the best of the game and had created
some good chances but on their first break Earls Barton capitalised
on poor defensive work to score a soft goal. A second soon
followed as another defensive lapse meant Thrapston went two
– nil down after 15 minutes. In the 20th minute hope
was restored when Ross Munro converted well after a break
down the left. However within a couple of minutes an injury
to our keeper Mathew Hansord meant a reshuffle and William
Gadsby stepped up to the mark. Unfortunately, this was to
be no happy ending story and a third goal was conceded before
half time when defenders did not clear their lines again when
they had the chance to.
The second half started with much more urgency but with little
effect. The midfield was too easily being beaten to the ball,
which meant that pressure was mounting on the defense and
inevitably this led to goals - three more followed and all
of them against Thrapston.
Many lessons are to be learnt from today but mainly that
you have to compete to earn the right to win matches. This
is our first league match and we all know we are much better
than this performance suggests.
