Wilby U11 1 v Thrapston Town0
Last game of the season to finish off a memorable week of
sport – the Cheltenham Gold Cup, the finale to the 6
Nations and Thrapston versus Wilby for 4th spot in Weetabix
U11 Yellow league – marvellous!
But just as Irish hearts were broken in Cardiff so to the
Thrapston season finished in disappointment as well.
This was always going to be as tight a match as the previous
encounter had been and the first half was very much a war
of attrition as Wilby took the advantage of the slope and
the majority of the footballing initiative. Thrapston dug
in and were the more happier of the teams to reach the break
with the scores tied at 0-0.
The second half opened more brightly as the large pitch began
to take its toll on weary legs and the game was there for
the taking by either side. Wilby had taken the lesson of the
Welsh and doubled up defensively on our O’Driscoll (Caller)
and made life very difficult all round.
The turning point was the injury to Munro, which reduced
Thrapston to 10 players for the last 10 minutes. This was
too much too ask of the team and finally succumbed to a poorly
defended goal kick with 5 minutes to go.
Second best gets what it deserves in a 2 horse race, and
the frailties of the team were all too apparent today as too
many players were below par or just plainly struggling in
such an important game. The long close season gives the coaches
the opportunity to work on the weaknesses and all players
time to reflect on what is needed to keep improving.
