Finedon Vics 4 v Thrapston Town Juniors 1
Thrapston resembled Dennis Bergkamp today – they appear
not to travel well! After the one step forward performance
of last week, we saw two steps backwards this week as the
team showed little in the way of cohesion, conviction or competitiveness
in the first half. In truth, Thrapston were lucky to reach
the break having only conceded 2 goals thanks mainly to the
bravery of goalkeeper Mathew Hansord who denied Finedon with
a string of brave saves.
A few words of encouragement at half time to rouse the troops
saw little improvement and an inevitable third goal was conceded.
But then, a glimmer of hope that can come with a goal –
Cameron Glynn fired in a fierce 20 yard drive that the keeper
could only watch squirm under his body and over the line.
And so we witnessed the equivalent of “the charge of
the light brigade” as everyone raised their game and
for the next 15 minutes Thrapston dominated as for the first
time, they sensed they could get something out of this game.
Ryan Caller (not for the first time) damaged the woodwork
as he ran the Finedon defense ragged, but he was not to be
rewarded today for his tremendous efforts.
For a spell this match was finely balanced but the decisive
goal was to come from Finedon who punished Thrapston’s
stretched defense on the counter attack with a well struck
shot to put the game beyond doubt.
Finedon overall deserved their win – they dominated
the first half when Thrapston forgot to turn up and compete
and had the majority of the chances. Thrapston could have
salvaged something from this game, but you have to be able
to role your sleeves up and compete from the first to the
last whistle to earn that right.
