Thrapston Town Juniors 3 v Wilby F.C. 1
The clock was not quite turned back two weeks to the glories
of our last performance as Thrapston returned to their spiritual
(and academic) heartland of the King John School, however
the performance was spirited enough to secure the three points.
Wilby’s record to date suggested they were a strong,
determined and well-organised team – and that’s
exactly what they were, so the question was could Thrapston
match them.
In the early minutes Thrapston appeared to have taken the
luxury of the extra hour in bed to the field of play, as Wilby
set their stall out and pinned Thrapston back. But for the
decisive keeping of Mathew Hansord to steady the ship, Thrapston
could have found themselves trailing before they had even
opened their eyes. Gradually Thrapston did wake from their
slumbers and the team became much more cohesive and the balance
of play swung Thrapston’s way. Chances were being created
and Thrapston were unlucky not to take the lead when Lewis
Godfreys’ double effort was first cleared off the line
and then hit the post.
The game finally ignited in the last three minutes of the
first half when Ryan Caller scored directly from a free kick
following good play from Ryan Reynolds. This was immeadiately
cancelled out when Wilby equalised as the defense dozed instead
of clearing the ball – all square at half time.
So to the second half to decide if we could find a victor.
Thrapston on the whole took the initiative, as they looked
the more threatening with the introduction of super sub Alexander
Palmer whose directness and power proved to be another nightmare
Wilby had to confront.
In the 42nd minute Thrapston deservedly took the lead when
Caller sealed his brace with a cross shot in off the post
– was it possible he was edging closer to another hatrick?
As the teams tired the game became more open with play switching
from one end to another and anything could have resulted.
The outcome was secured in the closing minute when guess what
– Caller secured his hatrick! Quite remarkable in seven
games, four hatricks as he continues his record of only scoring
in multiples of 3!
This was not an easy game to win against a difficult and
very competitive opposition. Thrapston showed grit and determination
and although not firing on all cylinders were class enough
to dig out a hard earned victory.
