Expectations were high after holding third in
the table Weekly Rovers to one goal last week and perhaps
Vic Farm were expecting to walk away with the three points
after their 7-0 win against the lads earlier in the season.
It only took the opening minutes of the game for Thrapston
to demonstrate they were playing as well as the week before
and going to give the away team a very different game to their
previous meeting.
Jordan Ward stepped his season long good form up a gear and
crossed numerous balls in from the wing during the first half
but despite the forwards getting in behind the Vic Farm defence
the goals did not come. Andrew Bird playing in goal again
for the first time in almost a season was forced to come off
his line on several occasions by quick counters from the Vic
Farm forwards but strong defending from all the back four
ensured Thrapston kept control of the game other than Vic
Farm hitting the cross bar and the ensuing panic as the ball
bounced down in front of the goal eventually to be cleared
away. Kyle Fox seems to have found his form playing at right
back and put in a superb effort for the second week running.
So finished the first half at 0-0. Jack Rawcliffe’s
endless energy soon paid off in the second half tearing forward
to pick up on a ball in the box and put Thrapston in the lead
for probably the first time this season. The counter was immediate
from Vic Farm as they pushed forward and within minutes took
advantage of a lack of communication in the Thrapston defence
to grab the equaliser.
Thrapston continued to dominate and a long range free kick
from Carlos Lewis coming close to beating the keeper seemed
to be the spark needed for the last push from a now tiring
team. With little time to go Carlos again used his set piece
ability and fired a curling ball in towards the near post
from a corner to be picked out of the air by Paul Spicker
who made no mistake heading the ball into the net with a finish
that the Charltons would have been proud of and we shall all
remember for a long time to come.
