Thrapston Town 4 - Finedon Vics 3
In a game that was always going to be close,
this bottom of the table clash stood up to it's promise from
two evenly matched sides.
Thrapston started brightly and soon were one
nil up following a long-range effort from Ryan Gavin, that
looped over the stranded Finedon keeper. Within five minutes
Finedon drew level, the Vics striker running on clear and
finishing well. Thrapston then pinned Finedon back for a ten
minute spell, but couldn't make their chances tell until Kai
Robinson let loose with a shot on the right that the keeper
had no chance of stopping.Finedon were always dangerous on
the break, but some stout defending by George Gardener and
Sean Blomley kept them at bay. Vics equalised with ten minutes
of the half left following a corner that wasn't cleared by
the home defence. On the stroke of half time, with Finedon
looking for their third, Ryan Gavin took the ball mid-way
in his own half and a strong, unchallenged run was finished
in style, making the half time score 3 - 2.
Thrapston made three changes at half time, which
seem to upset the balance of the team, and again, the home
side were unable to deal with the pace of the Finedon Vics
strikers, although some good saves by Oli Ventham kept the
away side at bay. Thrapston tried to counter on a number of
occasions, and should have sealed the game, with Stephen Broom
having a couple of chances, but just couldn't finish. Finedon
scored their third equaliser mid-way through the half, again
after Thrapston failed to clear following a breakaway move.
With the game moving into the final phase, it
was anyones for the taking, but it was Thrapston who scored
again, Stephen Broom finally scoring; the Vics keeper unable
to stop a well taken shot on the run. Finedon piled players
forward for the final ten minutes, trying to draw level, but
some scrambled defending kept them out. Final score 4 -3.
Only Thrapston's second win of the season, but
with this improved performance, there is some light at the
end of the tunnel.
