“We won it five times, we won it five
times, at King John School, we won it five times”. Yes
Thrapston’s long awaited fifth victory of the season
was achieved, ultimately comfortably, but not without some
scares along the way.
With a bitter wind and spring feeling not round the corner,
but two blocks away stuck in traffic, Thrapston began this
match in good heart buoyed by last weeks performance, if not
result. But despite having the better of the chances in the
first half, in truth you couldn’t, assuming you could
buy one, get a paper clip between the sides, with Thrapston
escaping a goal line melee in which what seemed like 17 players
battled for the ball in the six yard area. Half time, nil
nil, all to play for.
At half time, what turned out to be an inspired substitution
was made. Robert Winfield was thrown on in a midfield berth,
as opposed to his normal defensive position, but in the early
part of the second half it made little difference, as a positive
result looked increasingly as likely a Liverpool striker with
a golden boot.
Then from a corner, the ball was forced home by Winfield
– his first goal for the side, and a fiver better off
courtesy of a family incentive scheme. From here Thrapston
asserted control with probing balls from Mssrs Chandler Abbott
and Alsop for the willing runs of Luke Rivett and Devante
Hodgson become an increasing feature of the match. From one
of these Rivett soon made it two, then Hodgson three, before
another fine Thrapston move was converted by Josh Cummins
to make it four and complete the victory, as the Pumas were
unable to reduce the deficit (I hate that D word)
So, a victory at last and one on which the side can be proud,
given the conditions and the need for patience. Onwards and
upwards towards the Aztecs next week.
Final Score – Thrapston Town four, Borough Alliance
Nul.
MOTM – On a day when many players were in the frame,
for his response to financial inducement, and for turning
the match in Thrapston’s favour the man of the match
went to Robert Winfield.
