Thrapston Town 4 - Grammarians Youth 3
Today’s clash saw the Grammarians of Wellingborough
travel to play the bash street kids of Thrapston, in what
turned out to be a thriller.
Lessons needed to be learned from the opening day defeat,
and early on it looked like they had been as the Town had
the best of the early exchanges. After a couple of chances
went begging, they finally got their season up and running
in inauspicious fashion when they took the lead with an OG.
Failure to clear allowed the Grammarains to level things
up, before Tom Alsop opened his account for the season when
he converted a penalty, which the keeper did well to get a
hand to, but couldn’t push round the post, 2:1.
The game then sank in to a familiar pattern – The Thrapston
back four putting themselves in trouble time and again, buy
not clearing their lines, or being willing to head a ball
away. They got what was coming to them when the Grammarians
levelled things up, as Thrapston failed to clear.
In the second half the half time substitutions brought a
renewed hope and certainly enlivened a midfield that had been
slumbering for large parts of the first half. A fine move
down the left involving Josh Scarbrow, and Lewis Burton was
expertly converted by Luke Rivett to give the Town the lead
again.
Soon afterwards, good work down the left by Alsop, saw the
ball flash across the box. It was collected on the far side
by Burton who returned the ball in to the 6 yard area for
Alsop to notch his second and Thrapston’s Fourth.
Game over, time to relax? Yeah right!! The town then gifted
a third goal for the Grammarians as surprise, surprise they
failed to do the simple thing and clear their lines. However
they held on for a hard won victory, to start climbing the
table.
No difficulty seeing where next weeks training session will
focus – tackling, heading and “putting your foot
through the back of the ball” spring readily to mid.
Still a win is a win, and we should be grateful for it, and
the players can take heart in the fact that they battled through
to the end.
Man of the Match – Luke Rivett – a good finish
to open his account for the season, but more importantly some
good passing and link up play with his striking partner and
the midfield.
Final Score – Thrapston Town four, Grammarians three.
