Thrapston Town Juniors FC Under 11s
Match Report – 8th January Vs Wilby
The miracle of Istanbul, or maybe Kenilworth Road was rekindled
in some small way today, as a Thrapston side, down and defeated
at two nil after just 20 minutes play came back to take victory
three, two, in fine style and amid scenes of jubilation from
the assembled Thrapstonite supporters.
This was Town back in to action for the first time since
late November, and how it showed early on. Second to challenges,
and failing to clear their lines, created its own pressure.
This was capitalised on by a good Wilby side that were not
afraid to knock the ball around and created chances by their
willingness to head the ball, where the thrapstonites would
not.
Soon they would be 2 down; one a headed corner the other
a more scrambled effort, when chances to get the ball clear
were not taken. In all honesty it could have got worse, before
Luke Rivett broke clear and converted expertly to give town
a lifeline at half time. “Hello, Hello”, as Clive
Tildsley would have remarked.
Half time – a mixture of encouragement and a reminder
of past glory, was to work wonders. Town created chance after
chance in the early part of the second half. Mssrs Chandler
Abbott, Cummins and Alsop creating the craft in midfield.
While Rivett and Lewis Burton were a handful for the Wilby
defence.
After a period of sustained pressure which saw the ball pinged
in to the box three or four times the defence succumbed and
a defender rifled the ball in to his own net. Town were level.
Should they settle for that?
It seemed certain that they would have to as Wilby came more
in to the match as the Thrapston midfield began to tire. With
13 minutes left on the clock however Luke Rivett was set free,
but send wide, before from what looked like an impossible
angle close to the by line, he arrowed his shot in to the
net.
From then on the Defence marshalled by Sam Gallagher and
a tough tackling Eric Curtis stood firm to see it through.
So that’s how it stayed, to give the town the points
to leapfrog over Wilby in the league. Here’s to hoping
the results for 2006 are all like this, but maybe secured
in a more straightforward manner – just ask Rafa Benitez
what a pain it is to win the long way round.
MOTM – Luke Rivett – Two great goals, always
a threat, and not offside once!
Final score – Thrapston Town Three, Wilby Two.
