Finedon Victoria 6 v Thrapston 3
Nearly 6 months on from our last league match (20th March)
you can expect ring rustiness to have set in and today we
creaked through this game and to be fair got exactly what
we deserved.
Within minutes of the start we had gotten off to an inauspicious
start conceding an own goal as Lewis Godfrey sliced the ball
into his net. Two more goals conceded at a rapid rate and
the omens looked like a whipping on a Katrina scale. Thrapston
were rocking but credit to the players they bounced back and
Jamie Payne on his debut followed a long goal kick to prod
home. Alexander Palmer followed this up with a well-converted
finish – game on. However a soft goal before half time
gave the advantage back to Finedon.
Half time 4-2 to Finedon
A couple of changes at half time and a request to show more
commitment were still ringing in ears when we gave away a
penalty - 5-2. What next? End to end football with Thrapston’s
attack causing problems with their pace and power and our
defence showing more robustness in dealing with the very good
Finedon attack. Just reward for all his strong running Jamie
Payne scored his second goal again hunting down a through
ball.
The final goal of the game was an own goal from Liam Carter
who rose like Duncan Ferguson to send a bullet header past
his keeper – unjust for someone who had shown great
commitment throughout the match.
This game could have easily been double the final score line.
We shall get the WD40 out during the week to address the rustiness
but the players must all understand and apply the same level
of commitment on the pitch as their opposition did. Too many
players today did not compete and did not follow game plans
- in this league you will pay the price. Saying this the players
kept going to the end and they all know they can play much
better than this.
