Thrapston 2 v Rothwell Aztecs 3
Thrapston hosted the high-flying Aztecs and turned in an
uncharacteristic Jeckyll and Hyde performance, eventually
losing a thrilling encounter by the odd goal.
A lethargic first half team performance saw Thrapston ride
their luck to only concede 2 goals in the first half, and
from the touch line it appeared that too many players spending
time in contemplation rather than action on Remembrance Sunday
– not a performance the team will want to remember,
but one to be learnt from.
The second half saw a much more effervescent Thrapston and
although conceding an early goal immediately bounced back
as Tyrone Love stole in at the back post to pull a goal back.
Thrapston’s tails were up and they began to boss the
game, with the defence doing their job and were much more
convincing containing the swift attacking Aztecs. Alexander
Palmer seemed much more comfortable without his protective
bobble hat and began to cause real problems for the Aztecs
winning a penalty only to miss “Waddlesque”.
The last 5 minutes was exciting as England v Argentina the
previous night. Following a nasty foul that saw “Foxy”
Barlow carried from the field, Thrapston made the perfect
footballing reply. Ryan Caller was rewarded for his outstanding
midfield performance firing home Thrapston’s second
goal from the beautifully flighted free kick from Cameron
Glynn.
Your imagination could hear the bugle charge as Thrapston
laid siege to the Aztecs goal, and so nearly scored what would
have been a deserved equaliser when the ball was cleared off
the line from a Glynn corner. Alas the bugle heard was the
“last post” as Rothwell clung on despite heroic
attacking from Thrapston.
History teaches us about the past and today of all days teaches
us to remember and learn from our mistakes of the past –
the team today learnt from their first half which made the
difference in the second half, and came so close to a memorable
result (if only the rest of humanity was so perceptive). The
team is learning, is moving forward and if they can believe
it, will be a formidable force in this league.
