Ise Lodge Hawks 1 v Thrapston 6
Seems like a long time since the last competitive match was
played (4/12/05) and the situation was not helped when players
started dropping like flies in the warm up – the Newcastle
factor …… I hope not!! Anyway wise words of warning
about being complacent against lower ranked teams (Burton,
Tamworth, Leicester and Clyde) should set them straight so
go make us proud.
The first half is best not commented on as there was little
to commend it from Thrapston’s point of view, as all
the weaknesses we have all too often shown surfaced in one
horrible display that so lacked commitment, pride or passion
never mind a bit of football quality that the team was unrecognisable.
To say we equalised on the stroke of half time from an own
goal that bounced off a retreating defender did ease the sting
of the half time lecture – we were lucky not to have
conceded a couple more.
The changes were limited to the 2 fit substitutes available
and the half time rocket that is becoming all too common.
Things did pick up and the key difference was our forward
partnership of Ryan Caller and Alexander Palmer as they began
to get quality ball as the midfield began to compete. Individually
they are a handful but in the second half they worked for
each other and they terrorised Ise Lodge. Palmer’s strength
and speed created the space and chances and Callers predatory
instinct helped him to 4 goals. Alex Barlow completed the
scoring with a lovely drive and in the end the headline suggests
Thrapston had a comfortable win.
However, the parents who braved the elements know the truth,
we made hard work of winning this match. Matty Hansord in
goal pulled off some fine saves including a penalty to keep
us in the game and Cameron Glynn needed wings to sweep and
cover the abundant defensive mistakes being made. We have
made it to the Cup semi-final so well done and it is best
to get these displays out of the way against “apparently
lesser” teams – we do not have that luxury in
the league.
