Rothwell Aztec 3 v Thrapston Town Juniors 7
A Siberian wind threatened to freeze the players but it was
a credit to both teams that they found a spring in their step
to provide a great game of football.
Rothwell took the early initiative with a simple tap in from
a good cross. Thrapston retaliated and after several near
misses drew level through Alexander Palmer as he beat the
offside trap to race through and convert. End to end football
followed with chances for both teams but it was not until
the final minute of the half that Thrapston’s Ryan Caller
crashed through from the half way line to smash the ball past
the despairing keeper to give them a 2-1 lead.
The second half started in a frenzy: Rothwell pressed forward
and were soon to have their equalizer as Thrapston’s
defence froze (literally). Ryan Caller immediately replied
with another trademark scorcher but this time with his right
foot to edge Thrapston in front only for Rothwell to deservedly
draw level once again.
The game became stretched at this time and it was Thrapston
who were to take advantage of the widening defensive gaps
in the Rothwell back line. It was super sub William Gadsby
who was to finally make the difference in this game helping
himself to a hatrick, displaying his a variety of finishing.
Ryan Wright added to his toll of goals apparently specialising
from corners as Thrapston ran out comfortable winners.
An excellent win against the second in the league shows how
the team is developing. The defence is gelling into a cohesive
unit with Carter and Glynn looking rock solid now that the
former has realised that its good to use your head. Central
midfield benefited from the tigerish competitiveness of Ryan
Wright and the forwards now have “goals” Gadsby
breathing down their neck.
We said before the game that all we need to do is fine tune
the engine ahead of next weeks cup semi-final, well its running
well to me - just need to add the nitro fuel for next week
and lets see where the ride takes us – hopefully Nene
