Thrapston 7 v Weekley Rovers 1
The message given to the players today was “Thrapston
expects that every man will do his duty” and just as
they entered the theatre of conflict the command run up the
halyard was “engage the enemy more closely” -
Nelson would have been proud of his boys as they battled today.
Thrapston seized the early initiative applied all the early
pressure testing the Weekley defences, but the first real
signs of threat was a range finder from Caller – a missed
howitzer penalty flying well over the mainsail! Let battle
commence.
It was our lead battleship that struck the first blow as
Alexander Palmer bludgeoned home from close range. A little
later a 25-yard cannonball free kick from Cameron Glynn shred
the Weekley net as it sailed into the top corner – our
gunners were finding their range.
Thrapston continued to pound the Weekley defences who stood
defiantly and at times counter attacked to good effect. The
closest scare for Thrapston was a bouncing bomb, which eluded
everyone, including keeper Hansord, but luckily the Weekley
sharpshooter misfired.
So half way through the encounter and Thrapston had a following
wind and were set fair for a historic victory but could Thrapston
press home their superiority on the weakened Weekley armada
or would the tide turn cruelly?
Early in the second half Ryan Caller steadied the ship with
a cannonade that nestled in the bottom corner, a deserved
reward for a towering performance in midship. Battleship Palmer
sunk his second of the match mopping up the destruction from
a Caller broadside. Debutant Alex Barlow plundered Thrapston’s
fifth as he hunted down and despatched a lethal cannon from
keeper Mathew Hansord.
A slight wobble allowed Weekley a consolation goal for all
their efforts. However it was Thrapston that administered
the coup d’tet, William Morrison rapier like at the
rear and then Lewis Godfrey utilising all his powers to head
home. A glorious victory was ours.
Nelson returned home preserved in brandy and as a matter
of principle I shall attempt that feat after this performance.
We live in hope and belief that things will always get better
but for this moment savour it, enjoy it because for now this
is as good as it gets. Fantastic performance and I am pleased
to report “everyone did their duty”.
