Higham Colts 3 v Thrapston Town
0 When a manager bemoans his luck with injuries, then you
can be sure that results are not going his way and he is
feeling the pressure. Thrapston today (according to the manager)
were missing several key players, with others playing for
the cause at something less than 100% - make of that what
you will. With this background, and the game against league
leaders Higham Colts, a Thrapston victory perhaps looked
as likely as an NHS with some money going spare, or England
retaining the Ashes.
On a cold morning and a sapping pitch, Thrapston started
sluggishly and fell behind on five minutes thanks to a failure
to clear lines. However this seemed to wake them, and for
the remainder of the half they competed on even terms with
Higham, but just failed to turn possession in to really clear
cut chances.
So at half time, the talk was of comebacks, and chances
to make a name for ourselves. But this was to prove premature,
as another soft goal this time an OG was to go in, before
many of the crowd has returned to their seats at the start
of the half.
A third soon after settled this as a contest, but to their
credit Thrapston never gave up and could, perhaps should,
have got a consolation near the end. Luke Rivett’s
running and commitment to the cause, was worthy of particular
note and was a lesson to others wanting to occupy a midfield
berth in the side.
On reflection, too many times today Thrapston lacked both
craft and work rate in Midfield, and with a defence struggling
to clear their lines on a boggy pitch, things were always
going to be tough. Surely it will be the midfielders who
determine the course of the rest of the season as we approach
half term.
