Thrapston Town 5 v
Rushden Rangers 0
League leaders Thrapston hosted second place Rushden Rangers
in this top of the table shoot out and it was Thrapston who
proved beyond doubt who were the big guns.
Fighting the elements and the slope in the first half the
Thrapston defence led by a lionhearted Liam Carter, parked
the proverbial team bus in front of goal and never let the
Rushden attack settle.
Although Rushden had their chances it was Thrapston who
were the most dangerous, none more so than Ryan Caller who
conjured up a goal from nowhere in the 4th minute to state
his intent. His second was just as convincingly dispatched
from a beautifully flighted free kick from Liam Carter. On
the stroke of half time Alexander Palmer joined the scoring
fray, smashing the ball past the despairing Rushden keeper
following a laser-guided pass from Cameron Glynn.
Thrapston 3-0 up having done the hard yards meant a half
time talk full of encouragement to keep the tempo and performance
going, and to the player’s credit that’s what
they did.
The majority of the half was played in Rushden territory
and only some very determined defence kept the score from
piling up. Alexander Palmer went on to complete Thrapston’s
goal tally with his second consecutive hatrick – his
third an absolute howitzer from 25 yards out on the wing
that the goalkeeper is still looking for – marvelous.
Half way through the league campaign and Thrapston are very
deservedly where they should be – top spot with a 100%
record. What was most satisfying today was that this win
was based on a strong commanding defence which, allowed our
forwards to do what they do best – score goals.
