Kettering Generals Red 0 v Thrapston Town
3
The weather dreary; the performance lifeless; the score
line flattering; the result very, very welcome and keeps
Thrapston’s relentless pursuit of Division 1 football
on track.
When the Generals and Thrapston cross swords we normally
expect combat full of dash and flair but today both teams
fell well short of their potential. The first half belonged
to the Generals who dominated proceedings without really
threatening to blow Thrapston away. Some small redemption
before half time as Thrapston stirred from their lethargy
and looked to mount some sustained football (realization
of the likely half time broadside?) with the best effort
from Alexander Palmer as he skimmed the bar from a floated
cross shot.
The players got what they deserved at half time the “full
barrage”, along with 2 significant tactical substitutions.
Immediate impact - better shape, more commitment, more football
and a goal from Ryan Caller. Set free by partner in crime
partner Palmer, Caller steered the ball past the out rushing
keeper. The second followed through good fortune. Caller
did well to create space out wide and whipped in a great
cross, which was turned in for an own goal.
The Generals fought back strongly and things could have
been very different if it was not for an outstanding last-ditch
tackle from David Morton as the centre forward bore down
on goal, quickly followed by a brilliant diving save from
William Gadsby.
The Generals were finally killed off by a goal fitting to
win any match. Breaking wide Alex Barlow whipped in a cross
to the edge of the box to be met on the half volley from
Cameron Glynn which the General keeper could only help on
its way into the net.
A game played between teams that have little between them
in terms of ability and footballing philosophy – just
that lady luck shone on Thrapston more kindly this time round.
But as they say, “the harder you work, the more luck
you have” – remember this, as results don’t
just happen!!
