Danesholme Vikings 1 v Thrapston Town
2
With one of two records likely to be broken today; either
Danesholme's undefeated league record or Thrapston's inredible
away record, it was the away side that grabbed the points
and kept their record intact.
With Thrapston kicking with the strong wind in the first
half, the away side made it difficult for Danesholme to get
out of their own half and created plenty of chances with
Ryan Gavin and Jason Styles causing particular problems up
front. Unfortunately the home side scored after fifteen minutes,
against the run of play, a looping shot, held up in the wind,
just creeping under the crossbar. Thrapston kept battling
though and were rewarded ten minutes later when Ryan Gavin
found himself clear on the left and picked out Jason Styles,
who scored from close range. Half time 1 - 1.
The second half saw Thrapston defending resolutely at times,
Sean Blomley and Rob Cunningham clearing up as the Vikings
pushed for the lead, but always looked dangerous on the break,
Josh Catchpole and Kai Robinson causing problems in midfield.
With Danesholme pushing hard with the wind behind them, Thrapston
keeper Oli Ventham pulled off some fine saves in difficult
conditions.
As the home side pressed, gaps started to appear in their
defence and a Thrapston win started to look on the cards,
with a number of chances being created. Finally, a long throw
wasn't cleared by the Danesholme defence and Ryan Gavin capitalised,
smashing the ball home to make the score 1 - 2 with fifteen
minutes remaining. If ever there was a time for defending
it was at this point as Danesholme poured forward looking
for the equaliser, but again some excellent defending and
goalkeeping kept them at bay until the final whistle.
An excellent, gritty performance throughout the side, with
man of the match going to keeper Oli Ventham.
