Thrapston Town
3 v Corby Hellenic Fisher
3 Thrapston went looking for a third straight victory today,
but they went looking in walking wounded, backs to the wall
kind of way, with a number of key squad players out injured
and Town able to field only 10 fully fit players from the
off.
Still it looked like this would not matter as they raced
in to a two goal lead inside the first 15 minutes. First
Devante Hodgson latched on to a through ball to make it one
nil, before good work from Hodgson down the right saw him
cross for Luke Rivett to score.
But then the foot came off the pedal and the Helenic Bhoys
came back in to the match. Fist a free header at a corner – the
237th such free header (according to the Opta Index) allowed
by Thrapston this year enabled Helenic to score, and then
an uncharacteristic goal keeping error gifted a second to
the visitors.
Before the break Thrapston regained the initiative when
Hodgson lashed (or was that crossed) the ball in to the net
from 25 yards out. Still a goal’s a goal and Town were
grateful for the advantage it gave them going in to the second
half.
The second half was always going to be difficult playing
against a strong wind, but it was made all the more difficult
when James Wordingham was forced to withdraw from the match
injured, having bravely battled through the first half of
a match that he really should of sat out. So with ten men,
what chance Town could see out the half with their defences
unbreached?
What followed was a backs to the wall effort by all concerned,
with defending the priority, but with Hodgson, now ploughing
a lone furrow up front occasionally causing problems and
forcing saves from the Helenic keeper. What a pity then that
in the last minute Town were broken down and the equaliser
scored.
A fair result in the end, considering the resources available
and the strength of the opposition. More of the same next
week as the fixture reverses.
Final score Thrapston Town Three, Corby Helenic Fisher three
MOTM – Today’s choice of MOTM was one for attitude
and commitment rather than anything else. With a number of
the squad out injured and the side down to a bare eleven,
James Wordingham was prepared top play through the pain barrier
for the side, and for this level of commitment he was awarded
the MOTM award today.
