Corby Hellenic Fisher 1 v Thrapston Town
3
With everyone assembled and no casualties from the move
the British Summer Time still slumbering in their pit, Town
made the trip to Corby for the second instalment in a double
header that saw the sides draw 3-3 last weekend. Town were
again reduced to the bare bones in terms of squad with a
number of players still out injured, ill or away, and so
fingers were crossed that those present could come through
unscathed.
The early pressure was from Hellenic who won a succession
of corners, and town were lucky no to concede from any one
of these. At the other end, Thrapston were having plenty
of the play, but not forcing the Hellenic keeper into making
many saves.
Then with five minutes to go in the first half, and just
as Town were looking forward to making it to half time intact,
Hellenic scored. From another corner the ball was partially
cleared, but the midfield did not close down the second ball
and the Hellenic player was able to pick his spot from about
10 yards out.
So one nil down at half time, but no need to panic, just
a need to create and take more chances in the second half.
The start of the second half was a frustrating affair. Town
were probably on top, but still not working the keeper, while
at the other end, Alex “The Fish” (shouldn’t
that be Cat ??- ed) Vitue was called upon to make a couple
of fine saves to keep Town in the match.
Then with about fifteen minutes left for play, Josh Cummins
went through and was felled from behind by the last defender.
A free kick was rightly awarded, but the defender escaped
punishment, insofar as being shown one of the referees card
assortment. However, he did not escape punishment completely,
as up stepped Luke Rivett to curl the ball majestically in
to the corner of the net. Town were back on terms!
Thrapston seemed to gain in confidence from the equaliser
and next Devante Hodgson was put through on goal. Instead
of taking the ball too far towards the keeper, he shot early,
as worked on on the training field, and this gave the keeper
no chance as the ball nestled in the corner of the net. Don’t
you just love it when a plan comes together?
With a couple of minutes left for play Hodgson advanced
well down the left before sliding the ball across the six
yard area, where Robert Winfield smashed the ball in to the
roof of the net, to make things safe.
Town thought they were safe and sat back. But whereas in
the first half no time was added on, suddenly the crowd were
wondering whether, as part of the recalibration process to
BST, the Referee’s Tag had malfunctioned as we played
on and on. Four and a half minutes in the end, but fortunately,
Town were able to see these out for the victory.
So three victories and a draw in March. Team of the month?
I dunno, but certainly a team of which everyone can be proud
these last few weeks. Compare and contrast to another team
we would like to be proud of but who continue to disappoint
on the international stage.
Final score Thrapston Town Three, Corby Helenic Fisher one
MOTM – All heroes today (again), so difficult to pinpoint
one player. However, for the latest in a season long string
of steady performances at left back, the MOTM today was Josh
Scarbrow. |
