Thrapston Town
2 v Kettering Generals Blue

“Learn from your mistakes and turn up with some pride
and passion…PLEASE” were the final words of
last weeks report and for good measure we added “be
confident” and “be positive”, as the thoughts
for the week.
And so the scene was set for the top of the table clash
of two of the best footballing teams in the division and
for good measure someone even switched on the sunshine. This
was an excellent game from start to finish as both teams
were inspired by each other to play football.
Thrapston bossed the first half as they had wind and slope
advantage, and excellent Thrapston approach play could never
quite find the finish it deserved. The Generals sporadic
assaults on the Thrapston goal were soundly tactically defended.
So half time came and neither team could break the deadlock
and it was going to have to be something special to breech
the defenses.
Something special, Thrapston had just the player - 5 minutes
into the second half Cameron Glynn burst into the box and
delivered a piercing cross that Ryan Caller instantly controlled
and rifled into the back of the net – sweet!
Now their tails were up and Thrapston continued to sweep
forward, and but for some inspired goalkeeping and class
defending Thrapston should have extended their lead. Thrapston’s
second goal was from a piece of wonderful individual skill
that had all the crowd applauding. From the halfway line
Alex Rutter sliced through the Generals defense to unleash
an unstoppable rocket high into the net – sweeter!!
This would have finished many a team off but real credit
to the character of the Generals who mounted a heroic comeback
and twice nearly snatched something only to be denied by
outstanding saves from William Gadsby.
Sunday dinner will taste so much better this week because
the performance today was sublime; the whole team responded
with great character, immense pride and fantastic football – lessons
well and truly learnt I am sincerely proud of the team.
