Thrapston Town 1 v FC Aztec
2 (AET)
In a pulsating cup tie that had everything from goals to
controversy, Thrapston ended up losing the game 2 – 1
after extra time.
On a pitch that held up extremely well considering the recent
rain, Thrapston attacked from the start however, when they
seemed to get near the box the attack lost its way and Aztec
managed to clear. In fact the only clear chance was when
Ryan Watkin challenged the goalkeeper for a 50/50 ball that
saw both collide, the ball squirmed free and Aaron Wright
on hand to poke the ball home, controversy rained, had the
keeper had the ball in his hands?? Did he have it under control
??? However, the goal stood.
The second half started with Aztec pushing forward and the
game flowed from end to end with either team having chances.
Aztec equalised when a defensive error allowed the Aztec
attack to pick up the ball and advance on goal with only
the keeper to beat. However, the Thrapston keeper had a rush
of blood to the head and a wild and rash challenge left the
referee with no option than to award a penalty. Aztec stepped
up and the penalty was taken and well saved……………controversy
number 2…….the referee recalling the penalty
to be taken again due to the encroachment of the keeper,
who was well off his line when the kick was taken. Aztec
made no mistakes with the second attempt and it was 1 – 1,
which was the way it remained until full-time.
Extra time started and again Aztec attacked early and with
a stationery defence expecting the goalkeeper to come to
collect the ball and the keeper remaining routed to the spot
Aztec took their chance and scored what was to be the decisive
goal in a hard fought and thrilling game.
Thanks to the Club Secretary, Graham Wright for picking “Man
of the Match”, which went to Aaron Wright.
