Thrapston Town 3 v Vicarage Farm 2
Vicarage Farm have struggled early on this season,
but were to prove the old adage, “no such thing as a
poor farmer”, as they took Town all the way in what
was to prove an exciting match between two evenly matched
sides, with the probable difference between the sides, in
the end, Town’s ability convert a higher percentage
of chances created.
The game started with Thrapston playing with a sizable breeze
at their backs and after a tense opening, Devante Hodgson
eased things with a blistering show of pace and excellent
finish from an acute angle after being put in by a good ball
from Luke Rivett playing in an unaccustomed role wide left.
But then the wheels came off – not from Farm’s
tractor, but from the defensive Aston Martin being fashioned
this season at the heart of the Town defence. First balls
were not won, and then second balls not really contested for
a period in the first half, and early second when in reality
the Farmer’s boys could have put the game out of Thrapston’s
reach. Fortunately, though ploughing deep furrows in the Town
area and sowing the seeds of doubt, they harvested just two
goals to take the lead.
Then from nothing Town equalised. Tom Alsop advancing on
the Farm defence before finishing neatly and milking the applause.
So to a tense finale, with both sides having chances to win
but struggling to convert and remaining fallow.
Then with just two minutes remaining, some good Thrapston
interplay saw the ball flash across the six yard box where
Zane Bradshaw-Oliver was on hand to coolly side foot home
the winner, much to the delight of the home crowd.
So, not a pretty encounter, but three points none the less.
Town now set aside their pursuit of league points in favour
of a cup adventure in the next two games.
Final score Thrapston Town Three, Vicarage Farm Two.
MOTM – For scoring the winner and his first goal for
the club, the MOTM today was Zane Bradshaw Oliver.
