Thrapston Town 5 v Castele Rise 2
As, for the first time this season the chill
of autumn begun to bit at the face, so it affected the crowd
for today’s encounter, which was down on previous weeks.
The summer stayatums however missed a great game in which
Thrapston sent a message of intent to the high and mighty
in this league to sit up and take note.
Castle Rise sat in second place in the league going in to
today’s match, with a game in hand on the leaders and
only 2 goals conceded in 5 games. Their lofty position was
confirmed in the early minutes of this match when despite
having lots of possession, Thrapston struggled to mount any
serious challenge to the castle ramparts, and then conceded
the softest of soft goals when keeper Vitue, who was left
as the last line of defence against an on rushing attacker
careered (I choose the word that best describes what happened)
in to said attacker outside of his box and was lucky to escape
without at least a caution. The resultant free kick found
its way in to the net courtesy of a Thrapston knee in a vain
attempt to clear, 1:0.
Thrapston got back in to the game almost straightaway when
a great Josh Cummins corner was headed firmly home by Sam
Gallagher. Next up that keeper is careering again. This time
taking out a Rise attacker in the box. No doubt about the
penalty award which was duly completed to restore the Rise
advantage. But then a great Thrapston move culminated with
Luke Rivett expertly converting his chance to restore parity
to the match and restore Master Rivett’s confidence
after a few games without a goal.
Half time, 2:2.
In the second half, Thrapston continued to scrap for everything
and got their rewards. First, Devante Hodgson worked an opening
and his shot took a deflection in to the net. He insisted
it was going in anyway and duly claimed it but we have asked
the league’s dubious goals panel to have a look.
Next up Tom Alsop worked an opening and slotted home to make
it four. The troops were now flooding across the Castle draw
bridge and flying their flag atop the turrets. They rounded
things off when an Alsop shot wasn’t held and Hodgson
was on hand to tap in the rebound and take the points in this
battle.
Now it is autumn and the falling fruit and the long journey
towards oblivion. Well DH Lawrence clearly hasn’t seen
Thrapston play recently. They appaear not to head toward oblivion,
but to a bright spring, created from work rate, commitment
and ability on the evidence of today’s performance,
in which everyone played their part so well.
Final Score
Thrapston Town Five, Corby Castle Rise Two.
