Thrapston Town
1 v FC Aztec
2
We last crossed swords with Aztecs back at Christmas and how fates have changed since then as we battled it out today in the nether regions of the league.
Much the brighter, determined and constructive in the first half Thrapston created and spurned good opportunities to take the lead – but for efforts to count they must be on target. Palmer and Rutter up front looked potent and Carter and Whight rock solid at the back – the omens looked favourable.
However deep into the half our “achilles heel” was exposed as we were undone by a lofted ball over a square defence to allow the Aztec centre forward to race on and lob the stranded O’Dell – harsh indeed.
The second half saw us start slowly and Aztecs created several good chances as Thrapston looked nervous and hesitant – in truth we could have easily conceded more goals but we dug in deep. A second goal against did follow after some indecisive defending which could have led to a very negative reaction but true credit as we kept heads high.
David Morton pushed forward into midfield with immediate impact linking with Alex Palmer to create real havoc. Charlie Whight was unleashed with a license to advance at all opportunities, and if I had remembered the bugle we would have been sounding out the advance.
We pulled a goal back through the tenacity of Alex Rutter and hearts and hopes lifted for a Fulham like revival, but alas not today. The game continued at a frenetic pace with both teams having chances to add to their tally. A special mention for an immense piece of defending by Charlie Whight who appeared to have gained wings to fly back and clear spectacularly off the line to keep hopes alive. If one image can stay with us for the rest of the season it is that desire to never give up.
Good game poor result, we face stiffer opposition than the Aztecs in the run in to this season we just need to keep playing the football we are capable of with the right attitude – well done lads.
