Thrapston Town
4 v Vicarage Farm
3 (aet)
In a week where we have witnessed the following headlines
The Canoe 2, spend Christmas in the big house
Christmas Sales start early
The Spice Girls Concert sell out
Fabio and all his Italian friends run England
Today we were making our own headlines on Grand Slam Sunday :
Tevez scores as United sink Liverpool again.
Thrapston dig in for Epic League Cup Victory.
The local Headline was the result of a compelling battle between 2 sides, both playing with 11 heroes. ( Yes, both teams were like the Polish Navy – No Subs )
For more on this game – read on.
The National Headline was the result of old Taggart ( as an old hack called him a few weeks ago ) getting the better of the soon to be jobless Rafa.
Yes you heard it here first – the obvious reason that The FA have spent many millions on the pizza boys is that Mourinho will be installed as the new ‘pool manager by the end of the season. Yes, in fact it would seem more likely being able to buy a Nintendo Wii at the moment than Liverpool winning a league match vs United at Anfield
The Thrapston game started at a strong pace, on heavy ground and cold wintery conditions.
These teams had a close match a few weeks ago where Thrapston eeked out a result, and today was more of the same.
Thrapston started brightly – going ahead in the first ten, with a well taken goal from Romello Hodgson, Chances came to increase the lead, and went, the best action being when a supporter ran the length of the pitch shouting gooooaaaaallllll. No there had not been another in this game, but the giveaway turned out to be the United shirt. What a top man.
Vicarage Farm equalised with probably their first meaningful attack on goal – and could then have gone ahead before half time with the ball just whistling past the Thrapston post.
The second half started as the first had finished, with Vicarage Farm probably being a bit stronger. Thrapston scored the next though when Devante Hodgson used his pace to blast through the Vicarage defence and slot past the keeper. The linesmans flag was up – but the offending player had not been involved in the play. Thrapston extended further, when Romello Hodgson pulled the ball back for Tom Alsop to rifle into the roof of the net. It was looking good at this stage – 20 to go, 3-1 up, but the heavy pitch was starting to tell with some weary legs.
Vicarage pulled one back from a corner, and this spurred them on to attack the Thrapston goal time and again. An equaliser came with 7 mins to go, and now there only looked to be one winner – and it weren’t us. The team were tired, heads were down , whilst Vicarage had the wind in their sails. Both teams had chances to win, but both keepers came and held the ball well. Thrapston held on for the break and the 14 mins of extra time.
The first period of extra time was tense, with Thrapston probably having the better chances and the majority of the play – The legless souls of 20 minutes ago had got their energy, spirit and fight back. Half way through the second period, the deadlock was broken, with Josh Ledward striding forward towards the goal to place the ball past the keeper into the Vicarage net.
On chances, probably a fair result – On effort and commitment, both teams scored a 10 in my book.
For Thrapston, it would have been unfair today to pick an individual man of the match – Instead, they are my Team of the day – Yes even eclipsing United.
Final score aet. Thrapston Town Jnrs 4 – Vicarage Farm 3
And for all of my readers – Have a great Christmas.
