Thrapston Town 1 v FC Aztec
3
There was a definite Christmas vibe going on at Chancery Lane this morning. Sausage rolls, mince pies and the wafting aroma of mulled wine emanating from the kitchen – did we really want to move outside?
Unfortunately the Thrapstonites continued the theme of “goodwill unto all men” into the first half and were far too generous in defence. Just like the series, Thrapston lacked the X factor – little vitality and rather bland – grandma would have liked it, grandma most probably voted for it, but the first half will have been forgotten before cold turkey sets in.
Goal 1 conceded was a well-taken header and thoroughly deserved. Goal 2 saw Aztec’s number 8 make like the angel Gabriel and ghost past the Thrapston defence as if they were Herod’s troops, to deliver his message at the near post – bah humbug!
The Thrapsonites trudged off at half time expecting a version of “chestnuts roasting” but instead had a rousing rendition of “come all ye faithful, joyful and triumphant”. We are in the season of belief, so go out believe in yourselves and there is no reason you can’t “ding dong merrily on high”.
So just as England believe that Capello will be the saviour, our boys played Fabio-tastic. Where there had been diffident we had decisiveness and where there had stupor we had stupendous - a really rousing, rumbustious second half.
Against the tide of play Aztecs squeaked a comfort goal, that gave them a cushion, which they were to need as Thrapston charged forward. Gadders predatory instincts saw Thrapston pull back a well-deserved goal, but all too late.
Bouncebackability – demonstrated in the second half but the lesson learnt is that it is 70 minutes of commitment that is needed to win a game.
A feast of football and a mini banquet at half time, excellent fare before Christmas – thanks to all that played and supported today we all went home with a nice warm feeling hic!
Happy Christmas
