“I hope the taste of such a bad beating motivates the team to play with a pride and dignity they should have – the games left now are a real test of character it is anticipated that players true character will shine through.” These are the last words of Fridays report and I am so proud today of the team’s performance against the best team in the county that I find the appropriate words hard to come by.
Thrapston went 1-0 down in the second minute to a fluke goal as a lofted far post cross looped in under the bar and images of Fridays mauling flashed to mind. However the defence strengthened with Cameron Glynn in along side the rocks of Liam Carter and Charlie Whight would have no more of it and battled like demons to repulse the Hellenic assaults. In midfield Alex Rutter, William Morrison and David Morton needed an oil and stud change for the amount of miles they covered and tackles made. Up front Alex Palmer rampaged over defenders a nightmare to come up against with his directness. Oh yes Luke O’Dell was Mr. Coolcalmandcollected between the sticks assured and reassuring. Maybe it’s not fair to highlight certain players in such a great performance as today but these players performances were stand out.
Exciting, dramatic, gripping, thrilling – Thrapston’s Got Talent – if Simon, Piers and Amanda were here they would have signed the lot up. We rode our luck with some goal line clearances and wonderful last ditch tackling but to our immense credit offensively we broke with pace and determination hitting the woodwork twice and forcing several goal line clearances as Hellenics defence creaked and groaned when put under proper Thrapston pressure.
We did not expect to win today but as the game wore on and our confidence grew there was a growing expectation that maybe, just maybe we could grab a goal we most richly deserved ….. but alas ….. not today.
Pride, self-respect and honour have been restored by today’s performance thank you to the players it was your efforts that restored dignity to the team just keep it in place for the last 2 games.
