Despite the defeat, the general view of parents afterwards was that the quality of the football played by the under 10 yellows was the best so far this season. The boys really started to pass the ball around and apart from a couple of occasions the positional play was excellent.
The first 10 minutes was very even with much of the play in midfield. It was at this stage that Weekly started applying pressure through a succession of corners. It is a measure of how well the Yellows are defending that despite the number of corners Weekly did not score. However, the deadlock was broken when Weekly scrambled home a goal shortly before the break.
The second half was a much more open match with chances created at both ends. Weekly snatched their second goal after a good move down their right. After this, Thrapston put together some great moves of their own with all players linking up well to provide great chances. In one move both Joe and Elliot went close. The only reason that we did not score was because the bravery of the Weekly goalkeeper. However, despite our pressure it was Weekly who scored their third goal.
My view is that 3-0 was not a fair reflection on the quality of our play. It seemed deeply unfair that we conceded a further 2 goals late on.
Slowly but surely the team is finding it’s feet. My view always has been that it will take time for the boys to learn to play as a unit and understand how to beat teams who have been together for some time. That day is coming.
