Thrapston’s cup run continues after a hard fought game against Netherton Utd from Peterborough.
Thrapston started well and within 3 minutes were 1 up when Connor Ryan broke from the right and finished superbly, shooting across the keeper. Following further pressure Thrapston went 2 up when Jake Lockart scored after Netherton failed to clear their lines following a corner. Thrapston then sat back and Netherton began to pressurize the home defence, and soon pulled 1 back, when Thrapston failed on numerous occasions to clear their lines and Netherton took the opportunity to score. In the following minutes Thrapston were lucky not to concede an equalizer when Josh Smikle completely missed his kick and only the heroics of “Man of the Match” Jordan Knox prevented the equalizer. This seemed to wake Thrapston again and Luke Stevens was awarded a penalty after beating a defender only to have his heels clipped. Like all good strikers, he picked himself up and coolly dispatched the penalty into the bottom left hand corner. Netherton never gave up and again managed to pull a goal back before the halftime break making it 3 – 2.
Thrapston started the second half slowly and were under constant pressure for the first 20 minutes, how Netherton did not take advantage of this we shall never know, but in the cup you sometimes need some luck and Thrapston’s defense got it in abundance today. As the final whistle was beckoning, Thrapston at last managed to pass the ball like they know they can and Declan Ward helped ease the pressure by scoring Thrapstons 4th and final goal.
All in all, a tough cup game played with spirit and hard work by both teams.
