What a fitting occasion that after several weeks of R&R Thrapston are called into action against the Generals Blue on Remembrance Sunday. We can all recollect the epic battles these teams have fought in the past and the respect that both sides have for each other; but when the whistle blows it is the deeds of the day that count.
So to matters on the field of play. Thrapston started tentatively as the Generals probed our defenses but the skirmishes were repulsed with little collateral damage and as the game progressed Thrapston gained command and mounted their offensive campaign.
It was a moment of individual heroics that broke the deadlock. Alexander Palmer turned, broke the defensive line and rocketed in a howitzer from 25 yards to breach the Generals protective shield – a glorious goal. Thrapston invigorated by this action really took the fight to the Generals and pressed for more goals and although coming close on several occasions were just off target.
The second half was to be a tough battle. Against the slope and stiffening wind Thrapston fought a predominantly rearguard action. Unable to clear our lines and unable to keep possession, our play allowed the Generals to mount sustained bouts of pressure on the defence. In truth we defended with great conviction and bravery and looked as though we would be resilient to the end. But just as brilliantly as our goal was taken, so the repost from the Generals in the dying minutes, was from the same top draw – a fantastic drive carried on the wind flew over the helpless Luke O’Dell.
An honorable draw between evenly matched teams that desire to play football – a fitting tribute to all allied with this game. Great battling spirit from the Thrapstonites and as the cobwebs get blown away, momentum will push us forwards.
