Football is not always fair and today was one of those “unfair” days where Thrapston dominated possession and territory but did not get the win the performance deserved.
Last week we showed great attitude and effort but to make progress we had to add quality, which is where a lot of effort went in during training. The hard work paid off as there was some excellent football played throughout the team for a substantial amount of the match.
Slightly shaky in the opening 10 minutes Thrapston then found their rhythm and started weaving some lovely passing interchanges that opened up the Generals defence. However the final product was not quite there to turn opportunity to result.
It did take a spark of magic to open the scoring. Alex Rutter scored an absolute peach from 25 yards and was a goal worthy of winning a game – but alas not this one.
Thrapston pressed on in the second half to find a goal that would give them breathing space. Again great approach play but no luck in scoring. And so it came to pass that Thrapston got caught on the break – a penalty conceded and converted to bring the scores all square.
The dressing room felt as though we had lost this game and in a sense we had. The positives were much more in credit – great effort and commitment; strong organized defence; creative approach play; good support positions – it was the result that was not merited. The game was real progress in terms of football, keep the progress moving forward and results will follow.
