Duston Knights 0 v Thrapston Town
1
Just as Wilkinson’s sword had laid low the Australian hoards in the epic encounter in Marseille, how would the squires of Thrapston rise to the challenge of the Knights of Dunston in this County Cup battle?
Well the squires squeaked and scraped to a victory, but a victory with very little honour. The Knights were more heavy infantry than dashing nobility and their assault tactics often included, assault! The gentility of Thrapstonites did not deal with this well, often preferring to let others do such menial work.
If the football (and wrestling) didn’t keep the crowd entertained then there was always the interpretation and application of the laws of the game – which game was one of the questions. Many Thrapstonites are now anatomically confused as their shoulders are now apparently in the middle of their backs, thus allowing shoulder-to-shoulder challenges to become legitimate. And Ally Rutter used all his experience gained in the Cadets when he was ran through and ran over several times by a tank of a defender - not a game for the faint hearted.
Honour was eventually gained through an unlikely, but inspired hero. Gadders released from the shackles of goalkeeping charged forward received the ball, turned and speared a shot into the top corner, which proved to be the “Coup de Gras” as far as this mêlée was concerned.
We were poor today and we allowed ourselves to bullied. All the progress made over the last few weeks has taken a step back BUT we did progress to the next round of the cup. Lets lick our wounds get our anatomy and heads straightened out and do what we have done in the past – bounced back from a poor performance to play with honour, pride and skill.
